What is the Vestibular System?

The vestibular system consists of certain parts of the inner ear and brain, which process all sensory information related to eye movements and balance control. If these vital processing areas are damaged by injury or disease, balance disorders and/or dizziness may result.

Symptoms

Some symptoms of vestibular balance disorders are mild and only last a few seconds or minutes. Others are severe, and can potentially result in complete disability. Symptoms tend to vary from person to person, and they include but are not limited to:

Dizziness— feelings of floating, rocking, or lightheadedness

Vertigo— a sensation of whirling or spinning of either surroundings or self
